Signs of a Gas Leak
Many people know the awful smell of rotten eggs and associate it with natural gas. While this is true and is a great indicator of a gas leak, it’s not the only signal of a problem. If you are noticing any of the following signs, call for assistance immediately:
- Hissing or whistling near a gas line
- A dusty or white cloud near the line
- Damages in the gas line
- Bubbles forming in water
- Unexplained dead houseplants
- Higher gas bills than normal
These are all signs of a gas leak in the home. Because gas causes a reduction in oxygen in the air and is toxic to constantly breathe in, there can also be physical manifestations:
- Breathing difficulties
- Flu-like symptoms
- Fatigue or tiredness
- Mood changes
- Chest pains
Pets can also exhibit these symptoms, and it should be noted that inhalation of natural gas can be linked to death.
Another concern to note is carbon monoxide in your home. Carbon monoxide is released if gas is not burned off completely. Carbon monoxide poisoning can have bodily symptoms similar to natural gas and can also be fatal if not dealt with quickly.
What to do in the Event of a Gas Leak:
As mentioned, first call 911, and then a gas line repairman. However, if you’re noticing any combination of these signs and symptoms, you should evacuate family and pets from the area. Leave doors and windows open, turn off your pilot light, then call from a safe distance as any static electricity could ignite the fumes.
Sometimes, a gas leak is suspected but you’re not sure because of the lack of rotten egg smell. Don’t attempt to find or repair the leak yourself. Instead, write down any symptoms that are being experienced and leave the home for a bit. Upon your return, notice which symptoms come back and make the call to a gas line contractor.
